Colostrum FAQs
What is first-milking colostrum?
Colostrum is the pre-milk liquid a mother cow provides for her calf. It is at its most pure in the time between birth and six hours after birth. After this, it begins to transition into milk with each passing hour and the bioactive components of colostrum begin to change. Calves are born without natural immunities so their systems get a jump start from the high concentration of antibodies (immunoglobulins) in the initial colostrum they receive. First-milking colostrum is particularly high in IgG. This immunoglobulin provides passive immunity to the calf, protecting it from pathogens and diseases in the crucial first few weeks of life. Other critical nutrients present in first-milking colostrum include: growth factors, lactoferrin, cytokines, proline-rich polypeptides (PRPs), minerals and vitamins, and the energy-dense proteins and essential fatty acids our bodies need.Extensive research has shown first-milking colostrum has immense potential for improving human health. The studies show, among many benefits, that it rebuilds the natural barriers throughout our bodies, offers immune support, and enhances athletic performance.
Are you denying the newborn calf of its colostrum?
No. We work closely with our dairy farmers to ensure calves always get what they need to survive and thrive in their new environment first. They drink all they can consume and then we carefully collect and preserve the rest using our proprietary process.
What is the percentage of IgG and IgA in first-milking colostrum products?
The antibody proteins in colostrum include immunoglobulins G (IgG) and A (IgA). IgG helps our blood fight infections and IgA protects our respiratory tract and digestive system. Pure colostrum is between 25–30% IgG and 1.2–1.8% IgA (this is exactly what PerCōBa® contains because our colostrum is never altered). Some colostrum products are processed to increase the IgG and IgA levels but this can remove other critical nutrients that are smaller in the colostrum. PerCōBa® is a perfectly balanced colostrum and contains the Mother Nature recommended amount of IgG and IgA.
Is bovine colostrum lactose free?
Not entirely. However, the level of lactose is far less than that found in ordinary dairy products. Intolerance is rare, however, if this is a concern you should avoid colostrum or speak with your healthcare provider.
How much Lactoferrin is in colostrum?
Lactoferrin strengthens your intestinal lining. It’s antibacterial and antiviral and helps your immune system work better. PerCōBa® contains 0.3 – 0.5% lactoferrin.
Does colostrum have casein protein?
Yes. Casein protein provides the body with the amino acids necessary to build muscle. Casein protein is digested more slowly than other proteins, so it can help reduce appetite and increase feelings of fullness. Whey, on the other hand, does not contain casein.
How does colostrum mix with water?
PerCōBa® powder is soluble but requires shaking, a whip, or blending to most fully dissolve. Simply stirring PerCōBa® into a glass of cold water with a spoon is doable but requires more effort than stirring cream into your morning coffee. PerCōBa® Instant has been formulated for greater water solubility.
Is PerCōBa® free of rBST r(BGH), antibiotics, and hormones?
Yes. PerCōBa® colostrum is collected from cows that have not been treated with rBST (rBGH). All forms of PerCōBa® are verified to be antibiotic free. Regarding hormones, all dairy products, including milk and colostrum, contain trace amounts of naturally occurring hormones, but no artificial ones.
Do you remove anything from your colostrum such as fatty acids or lactose?
No. In some colostrum products, fat is removed to artificially elevate protein or IgG levels. However, this can also remove other important nutrients. Lactose is sometimes removed to harvest the proline-rich peptides (PRP) for other products. It is important to know that PerCōBa® has not been mined for PRP. Our goal is to provide you with Mother Nature’s prescribed formula for boosting immunity and fortifying gut health. It simply contains everything your body needs and nothing it doesn’t.
